A cherry blossom tree on the front of the fan is to symbolize Japanese culture. Cherry blossoms represent something new and, in Japan, cherry blossoms signify spring. On the backside there is a sticker that says, “sponsored by Coca Cola.” Coca Cola, as an industrialized western company represents westernization and industrialization on culture and tradition. Combined with the cherry blossoms it adds a the word new.

Tiana explored the ideas of perfection and discipline through fans, dance, samurais and warfare. 

Dance and warfare in Japan are traditional cultural values connected to social principles. In Japan, folding fans is an art. The fans themselves are beautiful- decorated in spring motifs, or red suns for good luck on a gold background for economic prosperity. The use of a fan is an even greater art. Japanese society values perfection in the arts, and this can be seen through traditional dances. On the other hand, discipline, another Japanese value can be seen through warfare. Both dance and warfare use fans daily.
