Japanese Cultural Crafts and Ceremonies

With a new leader, Emperor Meiji, Japan’s cultural elements began to fade. In order to represent this declination of cultural crafts, I folded cranes. Origami, one of Japan’s traditions, is slowly being left behind as Western influence is coming in. The crane made of the Meiji chocolate wrapper represents Meiji and the West flying strong while Japan’s cultural traditions, represented by 300 colorful cranes, is left behind. brief discription/overview
The art of paper folding, from the paper airplane soaring across a primary school desk to the most intricate and delicate flower, is much more than a series of folds. However, in order to understand the effect of Japan’s modernization during the Meiji Restoration, we need to unfold the common craft of origami.
