My Artwork shows the transformation of the Kimono into modern times. The cut up T-Shirt symbolizes the industrialization of the Kimono, while the fact that the print was made using the traditional Roketsuzome dyeing method shows the involvement as well as altering of the traditions.

“The Kimono is an universal symbol of Japan – a symbol of traditional beauty with a sense of timelessness and endurance.”

 The word ‘Kimono’ literally means ‘the thing worn’, which, to the Japanese people, means as much as ‘clothing.’ Kimonos are traditionally only available in a single size and are adjusted at the waist through a band.
